about

Shape of a Home was recorded live with West My Friend and Vox Humana Chamber Choir at Oak Bay United Church in Victoria, BC, Canada. It was recorded and produced by Juno nominee David Travers-Smith. The live video can be seen at youtu.be/9kymmkGTlkI.

The song was written by Eden Oliver while at the Banff Centre where she was attending a Musician's in Residence Program in the fall of 2015 to write additional music for West My Friend's upcoming album. For the first two weeks she stayed on target with daily guitar practice and the development of a few different pieces for the album, but in the last week she got completely and utterly sucked into this song. Every studio at the Banff Centre has a beautiful grand piano in it and this song came about by her writing on the piano. She loved the sound of the piano so much that she couldn't stop playing portions of it over and over.

While at the centre, Eden had noticed how homesick the mountains and the river and the evergreens and all that space made her for her upbringing in the north of BC (Terrace, BC). She paired that feeling with a longing for a sense of home in my relationships, plus the idea that musicians often have to make their home wherever they find themselves, and it morphed into this love song. Back in Victoria without her Banff-Centre-grand-piano the song continued in an a cappella direction. Eden built the basis of the choral arrangement and worked on it with Adrian Dolan, who is a co-arranger on the song.

lyrics

I don’t have a river to call my own
A flood of silt in my yard
I don’t have mountains to hold me still
But this mess of limbs is a start

I don’t need a promise of anything magic
Like postcards in between the walls
I just need memories I want to keep
And a little trust in the falls

‘Cause there’s a hole in the shape
Of a home in my heart
And I know you know
I hope to fill it with you

‘Cause there’s a hole in the shape
Of a home in my heart
And I know you know
I hope to fill it with you

about

West My Friend Victoria, British Columbia

In the modern musical landscape, it’s rare to hear something as put-together as three-piece Cascadian folk outfit West My Friend - something so layered, deeply symphonic, baroque, and mysterious in its own winking way while still courting an edge of disaster. Simple is safe, but complex is fiery, intricate, and ultimately more rewarding. ... more
